Secretary General Receives the Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross

H.E. the Secretary General of PUIC, Mr. Mouhamed Khouraichi NIASS, received on Tuesday, 14th of November, 2023, Mr. Vincent Cassard, Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Iran, in the presence of the staff of the General Secretariat; the meeting covered the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

Acknowledging the strong relationship between the ICRC and the PUIC, Mr Cassard said that the ICRC, as a PUIC observer, is keen to strengthen its relationship by playing an effective role in the activities of the 18th PUIC Conference to be held in Abidjan, Republic of Cote d'Ivoire.

Mr. Cassard added that the situation in Gaza is extremely serious and there is an urgent need for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the crisis, not only at the parliamentary level but at all levels. He added: “We are also monitoring the situation in order to contribute in a useful and effective way to the resolution of the current crisis, and the ICRC is also ready to receive opinions, recommendations and proposals.”

His Excellency the PUIC Secretary General then highlighted that what is happening in Gaza is truly shocking and the world should urgently help to resolve this crisis. The establishment of an independent Palestinian state and the provision of security are imperative, and the Red Crescent has a role to play in helping the Palestinians in this regard.

The Secretary General stressed the PUIC's readiness to be more effective in resolving the crisis and to cooperate with the ICRC. His Excellency also underlined the catastrophic situation in the Gaza Strip and said that there hundreds of bodies in Al Shifa Hospital, and even after 5 day, the families of victims cannot bury them.

The Secretary General concluded by stressing that the PUIC is ready to cooperate with the International Committee of the Red Cross and to provide the necessary assistance and support to resolve the current crisis.
