Islamic Group Meets In Berne

The Islamic Parliamentary Group held a consultative meeting in Berne, Switzerland, on Sunday 16th October 2011, on the sidelines of the proceedings of the 125th Assembly of the IPU.
Twenty-six Member Parliaments participated in the meeting which was chaired by H.E. Mr. Jassem Al-Khorafi, Speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly. The Speakers of Morocco and Iraq took part in this meeting. The representatives of the following parliaments also participated: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Palestine, Iran, Turkey, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Oman, Qatar, Syria, Sudan, Jordan, Algeria, Mauritania, Uganda, Azerbaijan, Malaysia, Lebanon and the UAE. Also the PUIC Secretary General Prof. Mahmud Erol KILIC and the Assistant Secretary General Ambassador Ali Asghar Mohammadi Sijani participated.
The attendees agreed to support the candidacy of Mr. Abdul Wahid Radi Speaker of the House of Representatives of Morocco for the presidency of the IPU. The Indonesian delegation expressed its disapproval of this step.
The meeting discussed two proposals concerning the Emergency Item: The Famine in Somalia; and Realizing Self-determination for the Palestinian People. The Chairman of the meeting decided to give the freedom for every delegation to take appropriate action on any of the two proposals.
