Azerbaijan Observes Anniversary of Black January

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan issued a statement on the occasion of the anniversary of Black January tragedy.

The statement mentioned that thousands of Soviet troops invaded Baku and other cities in Azerbaijan on the night of 19-20 January 1990 and killed and wounded hundreds of citizens.

The statement said that this tragedy was preceded by violent events such as the occupation by Armenian militants of Nagorno- Karabakh region and the deportation of hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis from it through the support of Soviet leadership. The statement affirmed that the soviet forces committed a massacre in the country in order to break the wish of the people for independence.

The statement described the January events as crimes against humanity. The statement declared the restoration of the territorial integrity of the lands of Azerbaijan, and warned that those who committed atrocities shall be brought to justice.
