In the World Islamic Forum: Women Parliamentarians Discuss Issues of Muslim Women

The World Islamic Forum of Muslim Women Parliamentarians to Discuss Issues of Muslim Women held its proceedings at Cham Hotel, in Damascus, Syrian Arab Republic, on 5-6 April 2011. Twelve delegations representing PUIC Member Parliaments Participated in the Forum. The Forum was hosted by the People’s Assembly of Syria.
At the inaugural session H.E. the Speaker of the People’s Assembly of Syria Dr. Mahmoud Al Abrach delivered a speech. The attendees were also addressed by H.E. the PUIC Secretary General Professor Mahmud Erol KILIC.
The Forum held four sessions during which working papers were presented which tackled four issues pertaining to Muslim women, namely: the paucity of participation of Muslim women in the socio-political life of their respective countries and how to remedy this; role of Islamic organizations and civil society institutions in the Member States in protecting the rights ensured by Islam for women; establishing mechanisms for rectifying the negative and distorted image of Muslim women; and the outstanding issues which imperil the cohesion of the Muslim family and how to address them.
The Forum made a number of important recommendations and decided to hold its next session in the Sudan.
