The meeting was attended by a large number of heads and members of delegations from the member Parliaments of the African, Arab and Asian Groups. The meeting was chaired by Her Excellency Dr. Sahiba Gafarova, President of the PUIC and Speaker of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan.
Furthermore, the meeting was characterized by a positive atmosphere of brotherhood and cooperation, with all participants emphasising their commitment to raising and discussing issues of mutual interest.
The participants expressed their full support for the candidacy of Her Excellency Dr. Sahiba Gafarova, President of the PUIC, for the Presidency of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and expressed their willingness to encourage all parliaments to vote in her favour on the 9th of this month.
Following this, the urgent item was discussed, whereby the proposal for the urgent item, submitted by the Parliament of the Kingdom of Bahrain and endorsed by the Arab Group, was distributed to the participants. The head of the Bahraini delegation presented and explained the grounds for the proposal relating to freedom of navigation, and none of the delegations present raised any objection to the proposal.
Additionally, the delegation of the Islamic Republic of Iran introduced a proposal for an urgent item condemning the war launched against Iran. The delegation of the Republic of Indonesia also introduced a proposal regarding the tragic situation in Gaza.
The Chair oversaw coordination with the various members in order to reach a consensus on the emergency item and to work towards securing a larger number of votes in favour of the joint Islamic proposal.
A number of delegations made statements addressing recent developments and noted the following:
- Emphasising the importance of the Palestinian cause and highlighting the extremely grave humanitarian situation in Gaza, while condemning Israeli practices, as well as drawing attention to the tragic situation in the West Bank.
- Condemning the war waged on Iran by the United States of America and Israel.
- Condemning all attacks targeting any of the Member States, particularly those against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which is considered the spiritual centre (Qibla) of Islam and home to the Prophet’s Mosque, and emphasising the need to respect the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of all Member States.
- The importance of addressing the issues faced by Muslim minorities, particularly their vulnerable conditions in India.
- His Excellency the Speaker of the Shura Council of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan announced that the Next Meeting of the International Parliamentarians' Congress (IPC), which was scheduled to take place in Pakistan in October, will be postponed until November 2026, and called on all PUIC Member Parliaments to participate in it. His Excellency also highlighted Pakistan’s efforts to resolve crises in the region.
