Statement by the PUIC General Secretariat on the Terrorist Attack on a Church in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

The General Secretariat of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) strongly condemns the heinous terrorist attack targeting St. George Greek Orthodox Church in the village of Hamoud, in Karak Governorate, in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The attack resulted in the loss of innocent lives and left others injured. This despicable crime constitutes a flagrant violation of the sanctity of places of worship and the inviolability of human life, as well as an assault on shared religious and humanitarian values.

The General Secretariat affirms that targeting places of worship and worshippers is a criminal act that is categorically rejected on religious, humanitarian, and moral grounds, and that terrorism, extremism, and violence cannot be justified under any pretext, as they threaten social peace and undermine the values of tolerance, coexistence, and fraternity among followers of different religions.

While expressing its full solidarity with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, its leadership, government, and people, in the face of this painful tragedy, the General Secretariat stresses that such criminal acts will neither undermine the unity of the Jordanian people and the cohesion of its national fabric nor weaken the deeply rooted bonds of brotherhood and coexistence between Muslims and Christians, which stand as an authentic model of tolerance and peaceful coexistence in the region.

The General Secretariat extends its sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the families and relatives of the victims and to the brotherly Jordanian people, praying to Allah Almighty to envelop the deceased in His infinite mercy, grant the injured a speedy recovery, and bestow patience and solace upon their families.

The General Secretariat also renews its call for the promotion of interfaith and intercultural dialogue, the consolidation of the values of moderation and tolerance, the combating of hate speech and extremism, and the safeguarding of freedom of religious worship, in a manner that contributes to protecting places of worship and strengthening peace, security, and stability within societies.

May Allah protect the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and its brotherly people, preserve its blessings of security and stability, and thwart all attempts to undermine its national unity and cohesion.
