PUIC Hold its Consultation Meeting in Istanbul

On the sidelines of the meeting of the International Parliamentary Union, the Consultation Meeting of the PUIC was held on 15 April 2026. The meeting was attended by a number of Speakers of Parliaments and Heads of Delegations, as well as members of the Islamic Group within the IPU.

The meeting was chaired by His Excellency Mr Abdurrahim Dusak, representing His Excellency the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament. After welcoming the participants, he delivered his opening remarks. Subsequently, the Secretary General of the PUIC, His Excellency Mr Mouhamed Khouraichi Niass, delivered a brief speech outlining the agenda and the proceedings of the meeting.

At the outset, the nomination of His Excellency Mr Khalid Al-Ma'awali, Speaker of the Shura Council of Oman, was raised. The Islamic Group, guided by the principle of geopolitical rotation applied within the IPU and in accordance with the established practice in this regard, acknowledged the Arab Group’s right to assume the presidency of the IPU for the coming term. In accordance with this principle, which has been established by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Islamic Group calls on all groups to take this fact into account when commencing the nomination and voting procedures.

The Islamic Group also decided to support and endorse the Arab Group’s candidate for the presidency of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, His Excellency Sheikh Khalid bin Hilal Al-Ma’awali, in his capacity as representative of the Arab Group. Considering Oman’s membership of the Islamic Group, there was unanimous support for this nomination.

Subsequently, all proposals regarding the urgent item on the agenda of the IPU meeting were put forward. Following a thorough examination and several delegations voicing their respective positions, the meeting agreed to support the proposal submitted by the Republic of Türkiye and the State of Qatar, which was endorsed by the Arab Group. The President was also requested to communicate and consult with all members of the PUIC, especially delegations that had proposals, to urge them to provide the necessary support for the success of the proposal submitted by Türkiye and Qatar, in cooperation with a number of other States.
