STATEMENT

Pursuant to the unjust three-year prison sentence passed recently by an Israeli court against Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Duwaik, Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council, the Secretary General of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) strongly and unequivocally condemns this shameful court verdict.  The latter is certainly a reflection, not of legal considerations, but of an Israeli political stand which is prejudicial to all and every legitimate Palestinian right.
          The PUIC Secretary General is of the view that this wrongful ruling is apt to further complicate matters and stultify any endeavours to find a peaceful and just settlement to the Palestinian – Israeli conflict.
          The Secretary General calls on all Member Parliaments to denounce this Israeli step, and exhorts them in collaboration with the IPU and all regional Parliamentary Unions as well as bilaterally, to seek immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Duwaik and his colleagues who are unjustly languishing  in Israeli prisons.
