The IPU Secretary General Mr. Anders B. Johnsson responded to the message sent to him by H.E. the PUIC Secretary General Prof. Mahmud Erol KILIC concerning condemnation and deploring of the practices of the Israeli authorities as exemplified in the detention and trial of the Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Duwaik and a number of Council members as well as other Palestinian Parliamentarians and Political personalities; and the PUIC Conference’s demand to release them immediately.
In his reply message Mr. Johnsson stated that the IPU Committee on Human Rights of Parliamentarians is examining the case and is in contact with the Israeli authorities regarding the situation of the Speaker: He added that shortly after Dr. Al Duwaik was detained, the IPU President called on the Israeli authorities to release him forthwith.
