Celebrating the World Arabic Language Day

On 18 December of every year, the world celebrates the World Arabic Language Day. On this date in 1973, the Arabic language was incorporated among the official and working languages of the United Nations.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) subsequently decided to promote the celebration of World Arabic Language Day, recognizing it as one of the international days observed by UNESCO.

The PUIC called, at its 19th Conference, held in Jakarta, Republic of Indonesia, on 14-15 May 2025, for the commemoration of this day, which is also celebrated by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). It also urged the organization of activities and initiatives aimed at supporting the promotion and spread of the Arabic language, as it is the language of the Holy Qur’an, the language of worship for Muslims, and a cornerstone of Islamic civilization with all its diversity, cultural richness, and plurality of languages.

The Conference also called upon the General Secretariat and Member Parliaments to cooperate in strengthening and promoting the Arabic language and to work towards enhancing its status in international fora.

It is worth noting that Arabic is currently an official language in more than 27 countries, the mother tongue of over 550 million people, and the language of religion for nearly two billion Muslims worldwide.
