The statement considered the bill an attempt to impose sovereignty by force on the Palestinian territories, which represents a serious escalation in the annexation and colonisation schemes.
AIPU also strongly condemned the draft law that seeks to repeal Jordanian legislation in effect in the West Bank since 1953, which prohibits the leasing or sale of real estate to non-Jordanians and non-Arabs. AIPU also considered this move a blatant violation of international law and UN resolutions.
The Arab Interparliamentary Union affirmed its categorical rejection of the legitimisation of settlements and the expansion of the occupation, stressing that these policies represent a clear violation of the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law. AIPU called for increased support for the Palestinian people and their legitimate right to establish an independent Palestinian state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, and called on the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities in confronting these violations.
