The Arab Interparliamentary Union Strongly Condemns the Assassination of the Martyr Ismail Haniyeh

The Arab Interparliamentary Union (AIPU) strongly and outrageously condemned the assassination of Mr Ismail Haniyeh, Head of the Political Bureau of Hamas, which was perpetrated through a Zionist airstrike that targeted the latter's residence in Tehran on Wednesday, 31 July 2024, while he was participating in the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian President. AIPU described the attack as a treacherous and criminal attack, stressing that it is a blatant violation of human rights and a clear assault on the political will of the Palestinian people.

The statement issued by H.E. Mr Brahim Boughali, President of the Arab Interparliamentary Union and Speaker of the People's National Assembly of Algeria, stressed that this work will not deter the Palestinians from continuing their struggle, but will rather further reinforce their will to achieve their goals. H.E also warned of the escalation of the situation in the region as a result of the Israeli practices, stressing that Israel's violations will worsen the humanitarian situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and threaten regional security and stability in the entire region.

H.E called on the international community and the Security Council to take immediate action to stop this escalation and impose the necessary sanctions.

At the end of its statement, AIPU reaffirmed its full support for the Palestinian cause and reiterated the need to strengthen Arab and international solidarity to confront the Israeli aggression. It also extended its deepest condolences to the Palestinian people, wishing the martyr Haniyeh mercy and his family patience and solace.
